Avaya Phone System

I recently started reading about Avaya phone systems and I figured I would post some of the knowledge I’ve gained before I forget it; this way I will always have a reference. Below are some of the basic commands that you should be familiar with when working with Avaya phone systems. This is in no way a complete list of commands. For more information regarding Avaya Phone Systems and their configuration settings please visit Avaya at http://www.avaya.com

The following commands should be ran in Avaya Communication Manager.

Avaya Communications Manager organizes and routes voice, data, image, and video transmissions. As we all know back-ups are essential. Manual backup type: save transition. To check if your system is backing up automatically type: display system-parameters maintenance

Dial Plan

Your dial plan tells your system how to interpret dialed digits.

Acronyms

  • Attendant (attd)
  • Dial Access Codes (dac)
  • Trunk Access Codes (tac)
  • Extensions (Ext)
  • Feature Access Codes (fac)

To display your dial plan type: display dialplan analysis
To modify your dial plan type: change dialplan analysis

Adding extension ranges to your dial plan

Before you can assign a station to an extension the extension must belong to a range that is defined in the dial plan. To modify your dial plan type: change dialplan

Adding a new Station *Note that ‘x’ is the extension.

Follow best practice rules. Determine the type of phone you’re trying to add (digital, analog, etc.). This is necessary as it determines the type of port. You should also record the room location, jack number, and wire number. Next display all available boards by typing: list configuration stations. Choose a port that is available (marked ‘u’) which matches the phone type. The board number combined with the port number is the port address. Choose an extension that conforms to your dial plan. Next connect the phone and add the station by typing: add station x or add station next to add a phone to the next available extension.

To Modify a phone type: change station x

Using Station Templates

If you have multiple phones you’re adding to your network the fastest way to do so would be to copy an existing phone (w/ correct configurations) and modify them for each new phone. An important note is that only phones with the same model can be duplicated.

Verify that the station phones match and configurations are as needed then type: duplicate station x. Enter all relevant information for each phone (extension, port address, phone name, etc.)

Using Feature Buttons

Programmable buttons can be assigned various features or functions. To modify feature buttons type: change station x. Use ‘Next’ and select Feature Button Assignment.

Swapping Phones

To swap one phone (phone A) with another phone (phone B) you need to swap their port addresses for one another. Again, these two phones must be the same type. To swap port addresses you need to change Phone A’s port address to X, change Phone B’s port address to Phone A’s old port address, and finally change Phone A’s port address of X to Phone B’s old Port address.

Removing Phones

Before unplugging the phone check the phones status to ensure it is not being used in any lists or groups. Type: status station x to display the stations status information. Use list groups-of-extension x to show if the extension is a member of any groups. If it is a member use the change command to modify the group and remove the extension. Use list usage extension x to display the stations usage information. If the station appears on the usage screen use the change command to remove it from the feature. Finally, type: remove station x. Now you can unplug the phone from the jack.
